How to Find a UNICORN 🦄 & THE Nr.1 INVEST !

142 🦄

That’s the number of companies that became unicorns — valued at $1 Billion or more — in 2019.

This might sound like a lot — 142 companies worth over $1 Billion! — or a little, seeing as there’s countless startups in the wild.

As it turns out, it’s fewer than 2018, which saw an all-time high of 158 newly-minted unicorns.

Marius Wlassak & Greg Hill would have a field day!

So, how do you find a unicorn?

Great question!

If we could tell you with 100% certainty and success how to find a specific company that will, in the future, be worth $1 Billion or more, then we would be in the time travel/clairvoyance-on-demand business.

Which we’re not.

HOWEVER, there are some pretty proven ways to greatly increase your chance of finding a startup unicorn in the wild:

  • Diversify your portfolio: No one buys just one startup, just like no one buys just one stock. By owning assets in dozens of startups, you’re creating a balanced portfolio with the potential to have gains pay for any losses. Buying into multiple startups means the greater chance of investing in a unicorn, and investing early pre-unicorn.
  • Be clever: Is an incredibly niche company with a market that barely exists going to be worth $1 Billion? Probably not! Will a company with a compelling product and a large customer base join the ranks of the Ubers and Airbnbs of the world? It’s definitely more likely than the former. Doing your own due diligence, considering all scenarios, and conducting thorough research is always a safer choice in unicorn hunters than, say, firing blindly.
  • Keep tabs on the market: The smartest unicorn hunters, like the smartest chess players, are always a few moves ahead. By regularly reading up on the latest happenings, trends, and technological/industry developments, you’ll begin to recognize patterns and trends happening well before they get massive. Check out leading publications like BloombergTechCrunch, and The Wall Street Journal, to name a few. This will help you spot potential unicorns easier, recognizing value in companies before others do. After all, if you’re hearing about a company from your friend or the TV, it’s probably too late.
